ABOUT SPICER TRUST

Spicer Cottages Trust (Spicer Trust) was originally established in 1897 to provide affordable housing support  for Uniting Church ministers and/or their spouses in retirement.

The original benefactor was Edward Spicer, who in early 1897 proposed ‘to make some provision in the way of homes: first, for ministers’ widows; and second, for supernumerary ministers who may be in straitened circumstances.’ And so began the Spicer Trust, initially with three row cottages at 37, 39 and 41 Fourth Avenue, St Peters. The formal authority for the Spicer Trust is the Spicer Cottages Trust Act, 1978.

More than a century later, Spicer Trust found the support for the ministers and/or spouses was not being requested and as a result made the decision to sell their property portfolio to Adelaide Benevolent Society whose mission aligns closely with the original purpose of Spicer Trust.

Now that the properties have been sold, Spicer Trust find themselves in the unique position of being able to generously assist organisations meet their affordable housing objectives and invite organisations to make contact while they determine where funds can be directed to best assist affordable housing programs.
